Curriculum

Curriculum Statement

Our curriculum has been designed using Dimensions Learning Means the World and across a two year cycle. Each year there are four main themes, each with an underpinning world issue of conflict, culture, communication or conservation. Other, shorter themes on our curriculum cycle ensure that we have full National Curriculum coverage and enrichment opportunities.

For 2023-24, we are on cycle B:

We are focused on providing high quality learning for all our pupils and will ensure all children are included and can access the curriculum.

In accordance with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Needs and Disability Regulations 2014, the learning in each subject is provided for all pupils in the school, including those with special educational needs. Lesson planning by teachers and subject leaders ensures that learning is accessible for all: agile, adaptive approaches to learning allow all learners to focus upon the most important small steps in each lesson.

Please also see our SEND information and policy and the First Federation SEND information and Equality policy.

Religious Education

We deliver the Dorset Agreed Syllabus through Discovery RE. Aspects of RE are also taught as part of the Dimensions based curriculum above. Mapped overview coming soon.

French

In Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) we learn French using Language Angels. Mapped overview coming soon.

Phonics

We use the Read Write Inc phonics programme to teach phonics from reception. The video below gives more information about how phonics is taught at Charmouth. If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher. Parent information from Read Write Inc can be seen on their website.

Reading

Alongside Read, Write Inc phonics based books, we use books from a range of publishers, promoting a broad range of reading opportunities. We assess children throughout their reading journey, ensuring that books are matched to decoding ability and also provided for enjoyment, supported or guided reading and challenge.

Maths

We use Herts for Learning Essential Maths as the basis for our maths teaching and learning.

English

Talk for Writing is used to inform our planning in English. We learn spellings using Read, Write Inc as well as the spelling of high frequency words through our own bespoke spelling package.
