Maths Intent at Charmouth Primary
At Charmouth Primary School, our vision is to provide a high-quality mathematics education that equips children with a rich array of mathematical skills, empowering them to use maths confidently and purposefully beyond their time at school.
We aim for every child to develop fluency and confidence in understanding mathematical concepts, ensuring they have a strong foundation before progressing to the next stage in their learning journey.
We believe that critical thinking and the ability to communicate understanding through reasoning are at the heart of mathematical success.
Our aims are to:
- Build mathematical competency, skills, and understanding across key concepts.
- Develop fluent mathematicians who can confidently apply their knowledge to a variety of real-world problems.
- Encourage reasoning about mathematical ideas, fostering connections within the maths curriculum, across other subjects, and in the wider world.
- Cultivate independent problem-solvers who embrace challenges and take risks in their learning.
- Inspire a love of mathematics and nurture critical thinkers.
Curriculum Structure
Our mathematics curriculum follows a carefully sequenced progression of small steps within key learning areas. We use the White Rose scheme as the foundation for planning in each year group, ensuring that each unit builds on prior knowledge and helps pupils make meaningful connections between concepts.
Units are designed to focus on specific areas of mathematics, giving children the time to deepen their understanding while making links across different topics. Lessons include a variety of mathematical representations and manipulatives to strengthen understanding and promote connections.
Assessment and Feedback
We prioritise live marking and conferencing as key tools for improvement. This approach provides teachers with immediate insights into children’s progress, identifies gaps or misconceptions, and enables responsive teaching to move learning forward effectively.
At Charmouth, we strive to make mathematics engaging and memorable, ensuring that children can build on their knowledge and apply it confidently in the world around them.
We follow the White Rose calculation policy. This provides a detailed outline of skills and how concrete, pictorial, abstract representations are used.
